Radiant Gem, under a masterful ride by John Velazquez, rolled to an impressive win on Friday at Belmont Park turning back the Chad Brown 3-2 favorite and the Mike Maker 8-5 second choice. Breaking from the 4 post Radiant Gem tracked the pace along the inside, remained patiently handled until set down spinning just off the inside into upper stretch, got bumped by Public Service, straightened away, dug in between foes inside the final furlong, got his crop entangled twice with Public service through to the finish when splitting foes, and was up in the final jumps to the wire.

We spoke with trainer Steve Klesaris after the race and Steve said, “That was a nice one. I liked this filly from the day we claimed her. We’re going to have some fun with her this summer. This was a great win.”

We also spoke with Hibiscus Stables CEO Mike Oliveto after the race. Mike said, “Here’s an example of why it pays to have a Hall of Fame jockey on your horse. They should use Johnny V’s ride as standard training for jockeys in jockey school. This was a very exciting race for the partners. And, let’s face it, it’s always nice to beat Chad Brown.”

Radiant Gem earned $24,750 for Friday’s win.

We’ll see how Radiant Gem comes out of the race and Steve will point her accordingly.

March 16

Radiant Gem breezed on Saturday working 3 furlongs in 37.66 over the Gulfstream Park main track. That work was 15th of 40 at the distance.

We spoke with trainer Steve Klesaris after the breeze. Steve said, “She worked well and she’s doing well. Today was a tightener for her race next week.”

Radiant Gem is entered to run in the $50,000 Maiden Claiming race going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf at Gulfstream Park on March 16.
