Gran Saman breezed on Friday working 3 furlongs in 37.90 over the Gulfstream Park main track. That work was 12th best out of 14 at the distance.
We spoke with trainer Steve Klesaris after the breeze. Steve said, “He’s doing great. I’ve been entering him to a Starter Allowance, but the race hasn’t been used. They keep bringing it back so we’re hopeful that it gets used.”
Steve will keep Gran Saman fresh as he prepares him for his next race which could be the Starter Allowance $16,000 going 5 furlongs on the turf on August 15 at Gulfstream Park.
Gran Saman ran a respectable third enduring a very troubled trip showing heart in the stretch. Breaking from the 3 post Gran Saman was in tight then came out wider leaving the backstretch. He was steadied near the three eighths pole, continued under slight restraint, then he was tapped on the shoulder. He angled out late in the turn, was set down driving three to four wide, and ultimately just missed place.
We spoke with trainer Steve Klesaris after the race. Steve said, “Royal Squeeze really came over and cut off a couple of horses and we got caught up in the fray. Our rider almost lost his irons and did a good job to recover. I wouldn’t be surprised if the rider on Royal Squeeze gets days for that.”
We also spoke with Hibiscus Stables CEO Mike Oliveto after the race. Mike said, “As usual our horse showed up with a very serious performance. It’s unfortunate that he ran into so much trouble because he most certainly would have gotten up for second and maybe even enough to have won.”
Gran Saman earned $2,860 for Thursday’s 2nd place finish.
Steve will see how Gran Saman comes out of the race and we’ll point him accordingly.
