Alwanees narrowly missed notching his second career victory on Friday at Belmont Park missing by a head at the wire. Alwanees attained a forward position after the field had been sent on its way, pressed the issue rated in the two path during the initial stages, was put to encouragement after departing the backstretch, followed the leader spinning wider as three-quarters was being completed by shifting into path four for entrance into the lane, cut into the deficit in a steadfast manner, led for a few jumps late only to get nailed by the top one.
We spoke with trainer Steve Klesaris after the race. Steve said, “When we got the lead I thought we had it. He ran a huge race today. Clearly this horse is better on the grass and he should be a very productive horse for us this summer.”
We also spoke with Hibiscus Stables CEO Mike Oliveto after the race. Mike said, “That one was a heartbreaker. When we got to the lead I thought we were going to win. Then when I saw the horse to our outside closing in I assumed it was the 4-5 favorite. When I then saw it was My Pirate at 23-1 I couldn’t believe it. What an exciting race. We’re running for good money in New York so we’ll happily bank the place money and come back and do it again next time.”
Alwanees earned $10,600 for Friday’s second place finish.
Steve will see how Alwanees comes out of the race and we’ll point him accordingly.
Alwanees breezed on Tuesday working 4 furlongs in 50.12 over the Parx track. That work was 24th best out of 34 at the distance.
We spoke with trainer Steve Klesaris after the breeze. Steve said, “He worked well. This was a maintenance breeze to tighten him up for Friday’s race in New York.”
Steve will prepare Alwanees for the $30,000 Claiming race going 1 mile on the turf at Belmont Park on June 15th.
